LA terminal expansion approved
The Los Angeles Harbour Commission has approved Eagle Marine Services’ ‘Pier 300’ expansion project.
The final Environmental Impact Report for the planned growth of berths 302-306 was recently authorised. The project will modernise the container terminal which is operated by Eagle Marine Services, a subsidiary of ocean carrier APL.
Geraldine Knatz, Port executive director, explained: “The Port of Los Angeles is investing approximately US$1.2bn over the next five years in capital improvement projects, including almost US$200m at the APL facility. We’re making sure that we optimise our facilities, green our operations and build on the advantages that make us America’s No. 1 trade gateway.”
The two year project is due to start at the Pier 300 facility in late 2012 and is expected to create nearly 3,400 jobs during construction and add nearly 8,000 permanent jobs to Southern California over the next 15 years.
Green improvements to be made by the Eagle Marine Services expansion include stocking the entire terminal with Alternative Marine Power (AMP) electrical infrastructure to reduce emissions from ships at berth and other measures of the strict environmental standards set in the San Pedro Bay Clean Air Action Plan.
