Liebherr e-RTGs for Canadian terminal

The order is made up of five e-RTGs for Cast Terminal and five for Racine Terminal and follows the retrofit of conductor bar systems to existing Liebherr supplied machines at the port.

“This important investment in energy efficient RTGs will significantly reduce carbon and nitrogen dioxide emissions, it is estimated that fuel consumption will drop by as much as 95%”, said Michael Fratianni, CFO, MGT.

“This equipment upgrade programme is the most recent in a series of initiatives intended to improve productivity, boost customer service, and expand capacity in an environmentally responsible fashion.”

Energy saving

The conductor bar connection is the Conductix Wampfler drive in L system, which includes the ProfiDat data transfer medium. This allows for accurate transmission of high data volumes in real-time between the RTGs and the terminal operating system.

The cranes, which have a safe working load of 40.6 tonnes, can handle six containers plus a truck lane wide whist stacking 1 over 5 high.

LED lighting is used throughout which together with other energy saving technology, reduces electricity consumption.

Liebherr supplied its first crane to Cast Terminal, Montreal in 1997. Since then Montreal Gateway Terminal Partnership has procured an additional four STS cranes and eight RTG cranes from Liebherr.

In 2016, a conductor bar system was installed at the terminal and associated electrical and mechanical works retrofitted to two of the earlier delivered Liebherr RTGs to allow for full electric operation. MGT has contracted Liebherr to deliver a further ten e-RTGs.
