Long Beach Clean Air
The Port of Long Beach reports that the Clean Air Action Plan shows a 50%-plus reduction in air pollution since its approval by Long Beach and Los Angeles Harbor Commissions in 2006.
The success has been attributed to the early benefits of the clean trucks program. Currently 90% of all truck traffic is with 2007 or newer trucks. Since trucks are responsible for about three quarters of the diesel particulate matter (DPM) that makes up visible air pollution, the shift gets credit for the 52% reduction in DPM from the base year. The clean truck program was controversial because it dictates to private companies what equipment they can use in the ports.
