Long Beach gives back to community

The workshop, on 21 March, is in addition to two other workshops this month on indoor air filtration and energy-efficiency projects, and parks and open space projects respectively.

More than US$46m has been approved for the Community Grants Program, which is designed to help those in the community who are most vulnerable to port-related impacts.

The grants program is divided into three areas of focus: Community Health, Facility Improvements and Community Infrastructure. This year’s solicitations will seek eligible projects under the Community Infrastructure Program (parks and open space) and the Facilities Improvements Program (air filtration and energy efficiency).

This year, proposed projects must be located in the priority zone, identified as the area most impacted by port operations. It starts in downtown Long Beach and extends north to includes parts of Wilmington, Carson, Compton and Paramount.

More than US$8m has been awarded under the Community Grants Program. Including money awarded under a previous grant programme started in 2009, the Port of Long Beach has given about US$25.8m for community-centred environmental grants and committed almost US$65m.
