Maersk Line receives energy efficiency certification
USA based ship management company, Maersk Line Limited (MLL), has become the first shipping company to receive certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for energy management.
The company was awarded the international certification for its commitment and ongoing effort to improving the environmental sustainability of its operations according to the Guide for Marine Health, Safety, Quality, Environmental and Energy (HSQEEn) Management.
A spokesperson for MLL, told GreenPort: “This certification will assist us in strengthening relations with our clients and build relationships in the future. By following the ABS guidelines, we will improve our fuel costs and reduce emissions.”
“We are evaluating new ideas and technologies such as Waste Heat Recovery Systems, Variable Speed Motor Controls, Self Polishing Paint Systems and Turbo-Charger Cut Out, among other technologies, to improve energy efficiency,” he added.
ABS requirements for the certification are based on the international standard, ISO 50001:2011, Energy Management Systems. The model specifies that organisations should set up targets and develop and implement an energy policy which takes into account legal requirement and other issues relating to energy use.
MLL joins a select group of companies who have proved their commitment to sustainable operations and improving energy performance. Its implementation of an energy management system supports reductions in energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts caused by shipping.
