San Diego reinforces environmental efforts
The Port of San Diego has hired a new director of environmental and land use management – part of its strategy to transform the way in which it approaches planning in the future.
Newly apointed Jason Giffen most recently served as the director for the san Luis Obispo County Department of Planning and Building. He holds a Master’s Degree in International Development Policy.
Mr Giffen, director of environmental and land use management, Port of San Diego, said: “I am joining the Port of San Diego at a dynamic time and I am eager to start work on many forward-looking initiatives set by port leadership. I am especially looking forward to contributing to the advancement of the board of port commissioners vision for ‘integrated planning’ and working with our partners and stakeholders to build an environmentally sustainable and economically vital port.”
The port is already well known for its green efforts. Just last month it was awarded a ‘Climate Leadership Award’ by the Environmental Protection Agency, for its efforts to address climate change in and around the port. This recognised its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in internal operations and throughout the supply chain, as well as integrating climate resilience into its operating strategies.
San Diego’s Green Port Program is an umbrella programme established in early 2008. It was designed to achieve the port’s environmental sustainability goals in six key areas: water, energy, air, waste management, sustainable development and sustainable business practices.
