Vancouver makes Green 30 list
Canadas Port Metro Vancouver has made it to the 2012 Green 30 list of Canadian organisations whose employees are most positive about their record on environmental stewardship, compiled by global consulting firm, Aon Hewitt.
The list is based on employee opinion data collected as part of the annual Best Employers in Canada studyand Best Small and Medium Employers study.
Port Metro Vancouver’s sustainability practices mentioned on the Green 30 list include its waste management programme and sustainable procurement guidelines and LEED gold certification for building design.
The port has also worked towards reducing air emissions and energy use and encouraging sustainable transportation by employees.
Darrell Desjardin, director of environmental programmes at Port Metro Vancouver, said: “We are very honoured to be named to the Green 30 list, as it recognises our employees’ support of the sustainability and environmental programmes that we have been implementing.”
“We have worked very hard as an organisation to reduce our environmental footprint, and this is an accomplishment we can all take pride in,” he added.
In addition, the port is addressing air quality and other environmental issues through initiatives such as shore power for cruise ships, the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, a container truck licensing system and the EcoAction programme, which promotes attainable emissions reduction goals for vessels entering the port.
