Coronavirus could delay port project
Coronavirus (COVID-19) could delay major projects in Singapore, which include a new port, the country’s transport minister has warned.
The Tuas Terminal mega port is due to commence its first phase of operations in 2021, however, Khaw Boon Wan said that if the outbreak carries on the supply chains for projects in the country could be impacted, reported the Straits Times.
“For now, the delay to project timelines is still manageable,” Khaw Boon Wan told parliament on 5 March.
“But if the outbreak drags on, it could disrupt the supply of construction equipment and materials.”
Construction for Phase 1 of Tuas Terminal started in April 2016. Tuas Terminal will continue to be developed in another three phases and is due to be fully operational from 2040.
More than 100 people in Singapore have tested positive for the virus, which originated in Wuhan, China.
A threat to the Tuas project previously emerged when Malaysia decision to unilaterally extend the Johor Bahru port limits into Singapore’s territorial waters off Tuas in October 2018.
