JNPT congestion..
JN Ports two existing container terminals continue to suffer congestion problems with some 14,000TEUs rumoured to be effectively trapped within the various stacking yards because of insufficient block trains to move them.
The terminal’s 300 metre quay, which has an alongside draught of 14 metres, is capable of handling up to 400,000TEUs per annum.
Concor has only been able to find a maximum of ten daily rakes of container flats to shift containers inland, although the average requirement is for a minimum of 16 per day. The company protests it has no money to invest in the necessary rolling stock, prompting locals to note that it did nevertheless find sufficient investment capital to fund a joint development of Terminal III with APM Terminals. Indeed, some wags are even suggesting that the continued congestion at the port is being deliberately fuelled by Concor as a response to the fierce criticism levied at it by P&O Ports, operator of the NSICT box terminal there; this has been denied by Concor.
The situation at JNPT is such that vessels are having to truncate calls, since a lack of space is preventing boxes from being offloaded, while stacking is now routinely undertaken outside the gates of both terminals. Textile exporters are up in arms, with neither JNPT nor NSICT able to offer any form of guarantee.
