Malaysia’s Kudat to benefit from funding
Sabah Ports Authority has allocated RM6m ($1.47m) to upgrade Kudat Port’s facilities, Bernama, Malaysia’s national news agency has reported.
Kudat Port was built in the 1960s and in urgent need of an upgrade, Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang said.
“The federal government has already granted $2.1m for construction of a ramp in Kudat port to prepare for the sea linkage. With the establishment of a sea linkage, we can export items such as building materials, household and electrical goods, all of which are in high demand in Palawan. At the same time, we can import agriculture products like pineapple, bananas, and seafood,” Mr Teo told one business publication.
Currently Kudat is currently restricted to ships of 4,000 dwt. However, its closeness to the blossoming Philippines has underlined the need for more facilities.
Two berth Kudat has a draft of 6.4 metres and a 3,000 square metre storage area.
