Massive investment for Kandla
Kandla has announced a US$1.11bn investment programme. Initially six new cargo berths are to be built of which two will enter service in November 2007. Four of these will involve a privatesector input, using the BOT formula and will cost an estimated US$95m.
These include NYK, MOL, CMA CGM, PSA, HPH, Evergreen, Container Corporation of India, Larsen & Toubro and Gammon India. A contract is expected to be awarded in September or October.
A capital dredging programme has also begun aimed at deepening the 27km long navigation channel to enable it to handle very large tankers. This contract, worth US$19m, has been awarded to Jaisu Shipping.
The port is also to have a new 500,000TEU capacity container terminal which is being taken forward by ABG Shipping in partnership with Voltri Terminals.
