MONGLA THREATENED BY MAFIAS

The contract for consultancy was awarded to Singapore’s Jurong Consultants and made on behalf of Horizon Singapore Terminals Pte Limited (HSTL).

Exporters using the Bangladeshi port of Mongla have asked the government to take immediate action against the 11 Mafia groups which it claims are preventing smooth operation of the port, as well as hampering further development. The leaders of these groups are said to include prominent local industrialists, members of local trade associations, officials from the port authority, a fertiliser dealer and local politicians.
