Pelindo III to spend on development
Indonesia’s state owned port operator, Pelindo III, has announced that it will spend Rp6.1tr (US$634m) on port development this year in order to expand its regional ports and ease container congestion.
The money will be used to fund the expansion of its container terminals at Tanjung Emas port in Semarang, Trisakti port in South Kalimantan and the new Teluk Lamong terminal project underway near the East Java hub of Tanjung Perak port.
The long awaited Teluk Lamong project is already ahead of schedule with work having already begun on the causeway, container yard, dockyard and connecting bridge. It’s due to commence operations in April 2014.
Pelindo will spend one third of the money on new container cranes and RTGs to help ease congestion at the three ports because congestion is now a major problem having intensified on the back of economic growth. According to Pelindo, the average waiting time at Tanjung Perak port has now reached three days.
According to the Jakarta Post, the operator will also shell out on the acquisition of 2,500 hectares of land near Teluk Lamong and Tanjung Perak in order to build a new port, construction looks set to begin after the completion of the Teluk Lamong project.
