Ports must invest to meet demand, says PTP
HarunJohari, chief executive of MalaysiasPort of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), has spoken out on the need for ports to investin handling to meet mushrooming container trade.
Citing figures that expect the global container trade to grow at an average of 8%-10% annually for the next five years, Mr Joharu described demand for port capacity to handle this growth as “significant”.
“It is therefore important for ports to invest in capacity in a timely manner to ensure they don’t become the bottleneck in the supply chain.
He added that PTP has “ample space” for expansion to build on its 2007 handling volume of 5.5m teu, a growth of 14.5% over 2006.
The port is looking to deepen its access channel and has plans to build two new additional berths to boost capacity.
