Private sector key to Indian development

The Indian government believes that the private sector will handle half of the nation’s cargo by 2015.

In 2009-10, 34% of Indian cargo was handled by non-governmental terminals, this was up from 27% in the previous year. A decade ago, the private sector handled just 5%.

Virtually all greenfield development of ports in India is now private sector financed, while private companies are in the ascendancy at all major ports as a result of public-private-partnership deals.

In addition, it’s the private sector that is developing port support and logistics activities.
