PSA quits Brunei terminal
PSA is to pull out of its concession at Muara Container Terminal in Brunei, which it has operated since 2000. The Singapore-based stevedore will be replaced by Brunei Ports Department personnel with effect from April 1,2007.
The decision to vacate the concession was, in part, due to the fact that Brunei’s government had decided to invest $1.7bn in the creation of a new, rival deepwater facility on the nearby island of Pulau Muara Besar, which would effectively have superceded operations at Muara.
A tender has been issued for a $400m container terminal,which will be developed in the initial phase. It is expected that a new concessionaire will be asked to manage both facilities, with PSA not ruling itself out of the bidding.
