To achieve this, it is estimated that the country will need 90 berths totalling 20 kilometres, while at present only 27 berths exist capable of accommodating major container traffic. India is expected to reach capacity crisis by 2010, when demand will outstrip port capacity.

The southern Indian ports of Chennai,Tuticorin, Ennore and Kochi (Vallarpadam) will shortly have new container terminals as the result of ¢586m of private investment. The planned facilities at Chennai and Tuticorin will be second container terminals, while that at Vallarpadam is a planned ¢385m transhipment terminal. Ennore’s ¢67m container terminal will be its first.
