Thai ports to go up for tender
Apparently, Thailand’s Marine Department (MD) will open bidding for the operation of four ports in four provinces next month in a bid to boost water freight transportation.
That is according to the MD’s director-general Sorasak Saensombat who told the Bangkok Post that the department will announce the terms of reference (ToR) imminently.
The four ports up for tender will be the Khlong Yai Port in Trat, the Khlong Wan Port in Prachuap Khiri Khan, the Sala Loy Port in Ayutthaya and the Nakhon Phanom Port in Nakhon Phanom.
Mr Sorasak told the paper that the tenders will be for a maximum of ten years with an option to extend for another ten years.
The ToRs are said to have been adjusted to attract more private investors, this includes paying less fees to the government.
It’s hoped that this project will help increase the value of water freight in the country from the current 10 billion baht a year by 15% in the run up to 2021.
