The Naha Port Authority
The Naha Port Authority (NPA) of Japan has chosen a subsidiary of Philippine-based International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
(ICTSI), Naha International Container Terminal, Inc. (NICTI) to operate a container terminal in Naha City, Okinawa.
NICTI is a Japanese joint venture owned 60% by ICTSI and 40% by six stevedoring companies operating in the port. ICTSI president, Enrique K.
Razon Jr. , remarked: “We realize that very few public ports in Japan have been allowed for private operations on a long-term basis, and ICTSI, a foreign company, has been given this rare privilege.”
He added: “As operator, our joint venture company will establish efficient and competitive services, but we realize that the ultimate goal is to make a contribution to the development of the economy of the Okinawa Prefecture – to serve local industry and commerce, and to generate new economic activity by capturing a share of the transhipment market.
NICTI is set to operate Terminal 9 with a controlling depth of 14 metres and a berth length of 300 metres and Terminal 10, which is still under construction and will have a depth of 15 metres and berth length of 300 metres.
