Tianjin port boss sacked
Reuters reports today that the boss of Tianjin Port in China has been sacked three months since huge chemical blasts occurred at the port killing more than 160 people.
Zheng Qingyue, chairman of Tianjin Port Holdings, will also apparently be removed from his positions at the city’s international trade and shipping centres.
Meanwhile his actions at the port are currently under investigation and there have been rumours that he could face criminal prosecution for dereliction of duty.
The People’s Daily newspaper said that government investigations found that the port operator’s management board had neglected safety oversight duties.
It also blamed the operator for poor regulation of Tianjin Ruihai International Logistics Co Ltd which was found to have been handling dangerous chemicals without a licence.
The safety standards argument is gaining momentum in China after a spate of incidents ranging from mining disasters to factory fires. President Xi Jinping has warned authorities that they will pay for their actions.
