Tianjins deep water goals
The Chinese port of Tianjin is spending $89.25m on creating the world’ s largest manmade deep water port.
The access channel to the port will allow the transit of 250,000 dwt vessels given a draught of 19.5 metres. The existing channel can only accommodate 150,000 dwt vessels.
In 2006, existing installations handled 250m tonnes of cargo and 5.9m teu. By 2010,it aims to be handling 300m tonnes of cargo and 10m teu annually.
Last year, China’s ports handled a combined 5.6m tonnes. Container traffic amounted to 93m teu. There are now 13 large mainland facilities able to handle throughputs of 100m tonnes, while 14 ports have a capacity in excess of 1m teu.
