New fenders open Maher terminals to larger vessels

Upgrading of the Maher Terminals facility in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, has included the replacement of the original timber fenders with high performance Trellex Fender units from Metso, enabling the existing structure to withstand higher berthing energy. The infrastructure upgrade, including the new fender systems, gives the terminal the capability to berth vessels as large as post-Panamax sized.

More energy per unit of reaction force

The Trellex MI2000 fender element met the design requirements through its combination of high energy absorption, low reaction and a compact footprint. Almost 100 fender systems were needed across the two contracts.

The MI element is a buckling-type fender, which absorbs more energy per unit of reaction force than more rigid units due to its greater deflection capacity.

Anti-corrosion coatings and low friction UH-MWPE facings protect the fender panels and dramatically reduce the shear forces created by the motion of a ship.

Over a kilometre of berthing has been fitted with the new Trellex fenders.

The 732m length of phase one has 64 fender systems while 29 systems have been installed along the 366m of the second phase.
