Auckland truckies breathe sigh of relief

Queues of up to five hours had been reported – with truck drivers forced to use busy inner-city streets as holding bays – as the port company struggled to handle the increased throughput associated with it assuming Maersk Line’s northern hub port role.

The readdressing measures have included receiving export containers ahead of time at an inland port facility, sharing vessels across two terminals, and hiring further labour. Additional gates have also been opened, empties are being directed to off-port sites and a commercial arrangement has been reached to use trucks to shuttle containers between terminals.
