Geelong considers intermodal freight options
The Australian city of Geelong is toundertake a detailed study of theimpact an intermodal terminal wouldhave in enhancing its freight anddistribution networks
Victoria’s State Government willmake available A$40,000 (US$31,000)for the study, which will aim toestablish how such an intermodalterminal could service not just theGeelong area but potentially ahinterland of 150 km to the north westof the city.
Specific targets of the study will be identifying the role a terminal could play in domestic and export trade; the potential for enhancing rail freight movements; and the impact of container traffic being rail shuttled between Geelong and the port of Melbourne.
