Newcastle primed for Botany traffic
The port of Newcastle could begin handling an overflow of containers from Port Botany much sooner than originally planned.
Container trade through Port Botany is growing at twice the predicted rate, with Sydney’s container traffic increasing 12% in 2006/07 to 1.6m teu.
New South Wales ports minister Joe Tripodi said Sydney will reach capacity far faster than originally forecast, and that Newcastle could need to fast-track container facilities.
