APMT chooses Konecranes automation at Rotterdam
APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has selected Konecranes to implement an extensive Automated Horizontal Transport System as part of its ambitious expansion project at the Port of Rotterdam.
This significant order, placed in Q3 2024, aims to double the terminal’s capacity, with delivery and commissioning expected to start in 2025.
Spanning 180 hectares, Maasvlakte II features a 2,000-metre deep-sea quay and a 500-metre barge quay. The expansion project is designed to enhance global logistics efficiency.
“By selecting this environmentally friendly automated horizontal transport system for the port expansion project, we’re laying the groundwork for achieving our ambitious goals and carbon-reduction targets,” said Harold Kunst, managing director from APM Terminals Maasvlakte II.
The order includes 71 Konecranes lift automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and a TEAMS equipment control system.
The AGVs will integrate with existing equipment, including ship-to-shore cranes and container stacks, while a third Konecranes battery exchange station will support the battery-operated AGVs, which produce zero emissions.
Additionally, Konecranes’ CONTROLS emulation software will allow APM Terminals to simulate real-life operations in a virtual environment, enhancing planning, safety and efficiency.
