Bilbao invites terminal construction bids

The concession will be awarded for a maximum of 40 years with a minimum annual traffic permitted of 1 teu/m².

Work to develop the area is in two phases with the first – to create more than 30 hectares of operational space – already completed. Phase two will begin in 2023 and will also create additional space in excess of 30 ha.

The port aims to improve connectivity and attract new traffic and shipping lines. Designating Central Quay – the last large port area reclaimed from the sea in the sheltered dock of the Outer Abra – to container traffic is key to achieving these aims, says the port.

The decision follows a number of consultations that pointed to an opportunity for growth in containerised cargo traffic in the port, endorsed by express interest shown by international operators who have confirmed that the port could be a real alternative to the problem of congestion in northern Europe, as well as attracting direct transoceanic lines and transit traffic.

The new container terminal is planned to be open for general use (public terminal). The tender criteria will be based on three main aspects: revenue for the Port Authority of Bilbao, traffic generated and programmed investments.
