Bilbao launches digital rail service
The Bilbao Port Authority has introduced a new digital rail service within its e-puertobilbao telematic platform, designed enhance the port’s rail-port logistics and help decarbonise the supply chain.
The new eportua train service is tailored for train operators working within the Port of Bilbao and is expected to streamline communication and operational coordination among traffic controllers, railway companies and terminals.
The service offers operators detailed access to daily and weekly scheduling, as well as real-time tracking of each stage of a train’s movement through the port. From arrival at the marshalling yard to terminal loading or unloading and back to departure positioning, each milestone will be recorded and updated continuously.
By providing full traceability of rail operations, the system enables maritime terminals to enhance planning and resource management, ultimately leading to faster turnaround times and more reliable service.
The Port Authority manages train traffic through Sibport, ensuring neutral and competitive manoeuvring services are available round-the-clock.
Currently, six maritime terminals at the port are equipped for rail operations, handling various types of freight including containers, conventional cargo and bulk goods.
With 27% of container traffic moved by rail in 2024, the Port of Bilbao leads Spain in rail share, with 4,071 trains handled last year.
The port is connected to 22 inland depots across 13 provinces.
