BLG expands Bremerhaven cargo capacity

Designed for high-volume operations, the crane boosts the terminal’s ability to manage a broad range of general, heavy and project cargo.

“The new LHM 550 takes us to a new level in heavy-duty cargo handling and is a clear commitment to the further development of the site,” said Axel Krichel, board member and chief operating officer at BLG Group.

“It enhances both our performance and sustainability.”

The LHM 550 features a 4.8-metre tower extension to accommodate taller ships and a 54-metre reach, enabling versatile use across the terminal. With ten driven axles and compatibility with shore power, the crane also aligns with BLG’s emissions reduction targets.

This marks the fourth Liebherr mobile harbour crane in BLG’s fleet, which includes models in both Bremerhaven and Bremen. A fifth unit is expected to be delivered to Bremen later this year.

Andreas Ritschel, general manager sales at Liebherr-Rostock, highlighted the strategic importance of the delivery. “This LHM 550 was developed to support Bremerhaven in its role as a high-volume, future-proof port,” he said.

Located on the North Sea and part of the TEN-T core network, Bremerhaven is a vital hub for transatlantic and intra-European trade.
