Canaries drive port digitalisation with 5G
Operaciones Portuarias Canarias (OPCSA) has selected Boldyn Networks and Nokia to deliver a cutting-edge private 5G network, accelerating port digitalisation and transforming operations at Las Palmas.
The project will introduce private 5G across the Canary Islands’ largest container terminal, supporting port connectivity, operational efficiency and cost savings.
“This partnership with Boldyn Networks represents a transformative leap for our terminal. The deployment of private 5G will not only streamline operations but also position OPCSA as a leader in port innovation across the region,” said Jan Nowak, CEO of OPCSA.
Digital landscape
Leveraging Nokia’s Digital Automation Cloud and Boldyn’s Private 5G as a service, the network will enable secure, high-capacity communications to power port equipment and more.
Key applications will include digitalising RTG and STS cranes, enable connected workers and support real-time monitoring of refrigerated containers.
By replacing costly fibre optic connections with wireless solutions, OPCSA said the deployment will enhance port operations and reduce inefficiencies.
With direct links to more than 74 global ports, OPCSA is a strategic hub in international shipping routes.
The private network is expected to strengthen its competitiveness by ensuring reliable, secure data transmission and laying the foundation for remote operations.
Boldyn Networks brings expertise in large-scale private networks for logistics to the project, while Nokia contributes industrial-grade connectivity technology.
As the rollout progresses, OPCSA plans to expand use cases and further embed private 5G into daily workflows, driving long-term efficiency, innovation and leadership in port digitalisation.
