Digital training centre launches for port automation
The PortSkill 4.0 research initiative unveiled a new digital training centre at HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) to advance skills for automated and digital port operations.
Developed by ma-co, the centre uses state-of-the-art technology to train workers for the demands of port automation.
“Our employees need modern skills to keep pace with the industry,” said Torben Seebold, chief human resources officer at HHLA.
“The ma-co digital training centre sets new standards, ensuring Germany’s port sector remains competitive through targeted, advanced professional development in digital port operations.”
Hands-on experience
As port automation reshapes the sector, the centre at CTA offers hands-on experience with remote-operated cranes, VR simulations, and a video wall for interactive training.
Connected to additional sites in Hamburg and Bremen, the centre allows trainees to engage in virtual collaborative learning, regardless of location.
The PortSkill 4.0 project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, responds to emerging job roles and skills needed as port automation transforms workflows.
Dr Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economy and Innovation, emphasised: “The PortSkill 4.0 project is crucial for future-proofing skills. This training prepares employees to meet evolving challenges in digital port operations while ensuring jobs are secure with strong collective agreements.”
