Georgia to invest US$29m in overpass
Georgia Ports Authority is to invest US$29 million in an overpass linking Ocean Terminal to Route 17 to help reduce the impact of terminal truck traffic on local neighbourhoods.
Led by GPA in collaboration with the city of Savannah and Georgia Department of Transportation, the project began with hearing the views of communities near the terminal.
“This is a port project in the best interest of the community,” said president and chief executive of GPA, Griff Lynch.
“We want to keep trucks off local neighbourhood roads for safety and sustainability reasons.”
The overpass will enable trucks to directly access Route 17, as opposed to using local streets to enter the highway. Scheduled to complete in 2026, the construction of both the overpass and junction with Route 17 will be undertaken by GPA before passing responsibility for maintenance to GDOT.
GPA will also build a dedicated exit ramp from Route 17 and a new truck-only entrance roadway into Ocean Terminal to enhance safety and traffic operations.
