Investor sought for key Moldovan port

The initiative, in partnership with Moldova’s government, aims to boost port infrastructure, support ongoing port construction and accelerate port development at the country’s only seagoing-accessible terminal.

This strategic port has grown in significance amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, becoming a vital hub for regional trade and fuel supply.

“This is aimed at facilitating inward investments in full alignment with international best practices and standards for the sector.,” said the EBRD in the tender announcement.

“The EBRD has consistently stated its intention to attract reputable investors to further support and develop the port into a competitive hub for regional and international trade.”

Critical role

Giurgiulești Port plays a critical role in food and fuel security, facilitating Ukraine’s grain exports and supplying fuel to Moldovan and Ukrainian markets.

It currently handles over 70% of Moldova’s waterborne trade and is vital to the country’s economic stability and Ukraine’s reconstruction.

The port’s planned expansion includes Phase II construction of the general cargo and container terminal quay, which seeks to add 70 metres of quay wall to enhance transshipment capacity.

Approved by Moldova’s Environmental Agency, this development aligns with broader efforts to improve port infrastructure and business park capabilities.

With €137 million in port investment to date and over 820 jobs created, the EBRD’s structured M&A process now seeks to unlock the next phase of growth.

The tender reflects Moldova’s strategic ambition to become a regional logistics hub, built on strong port development foundations.

In 2021, the EBRD acquired 100% of the capital of the Danube Logistics group of companies, becoming the sole ultimate owner of Danube Logistics SRL, the operator of the port.
