New crane for expanded dry bulk terminal

With a bulk cargo capacity of 2,300 tonnes per hour, the LHM 800 is digitally operated and future-proofed for partial automation, saving time and operational costs. It will be put to use at the expanded Steinweg Hartel Terminal which will begin operations this year.

“Our acquisition of a Liebherr LHM 800 for the Steinweg Hartel Terminal is an important step for us in ensuring that our bulk operations and services maintain strong growth,” explained Ulf Boll, chief executive at C. Steinweg Group which owns Marcor Stevedoring.

“We commenced the development of a new 160,000 cubic meter quay-bound bulk warehouse, and these are directly reachable through a single manipulation crane grab. Size performance, and mobility were therefore important factors in our investment decision.

The crane will play a key role in contributing to more economical and environmentally friendly operations. “The fact that it’s fully electric is also aligned with our ESG strategy and our path to a carbon neutral operation,” said Ulf Boll.

The expanded terminal will have 130,000m² of space, a 600-metre quay with 16-metre draft alongside, and vessel handling options from barges up to 120,000 DWT baby-cape vessels, both for board-to-board transshipment and discharge to and from the terminal.

Its development also supports a more sustainable operating model, including electrified shore cranes and conveying equipment, with 11,000m² of solar panels being installed already.
