Nigerian terminal upgrade boosts trade
APM Terminals has completed a significant US$115 million upgrade at the West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Nigeria, enhancing its service delivery and positioning it as a leading trade hub in the region.
This investment, aimed at modernising port infrastructure, will bolster Nigeria’s economy by improving operational efficiency, attracting more vessels and supporting increased trade flows.
“This US$115 million investment is a bold statement of our faith in Nigeria’s economic potential,” said Olaf Gelhausen, chief operating officer of APM Terminals.
“As Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, Nigeria stands on the brink of remarkable growth. We’re enhancing capacity, redefining customer experience, and forging stronger partnerships with the Nigerian government to lift global trade.”
Key upgrades include expanded yard space, new mobile harbour cranes, rubber-tyred gantries and advanced cargo handling equipment. These enhancements will reduce turnaround times, increase safety and elevate the terminal’s operational capacity.
The installation of a 1MW solar power facility and an innovative auto gate system and CCTV system reflects APM Terminals’ commitment to sustainable operations and the newest technology.
The upgraded terminal is poised to benefit Nigeria’s maritime sector by facilitating smoother logistics, improving cargo security through enhanced access control and supporting trade compliance efforts by Nigeria Customs.
As one of West Africa’s best-performing terminals, WACT will contribute to reducing the cost of doing business in Nigeria and fostering long-term economic growth, while setting a new standard for port efficiency and reliability in the region.
