Port of Los Angeles approves rail expansion
The Los Angeles Harbor Commission has approved a lease amendment for a US$52 million infrastructure improvement project to expand on-dock rail capacity and reduce emissions at the Port of Los Angeles.
Construction at the Pier 300 terminal, operated by Fenix Marine Services, is set to begin next year.
“Fewer transfers of cargo results in cleaner operations and more fluidity on our container terminals,” said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka.
“This project will make us more competitive and add to our ability to pursue more discretionary cargo headed for the interior of the US.”
The project will add five new loading and unloading tracks at the terminal’s intermodal yard, allowing more cargo to be directly loaded onto trains, making freight movement more energy-efficient and reducing truck traffic.
In addition to the new rail tracks, the project will include grading and paving, fire protection upgrades, electrical improvements, and storm drain design enhancements for compliance with low impact development standards.
The project is backed by US$18 million from the US Department of Transportation Maritime Administration and US$19 million from California’s Trade Corridor Enhancement Program, with the Port of Los Angeles covering the remaining costs.
In January 2022, CMA CGM fully acquired Fenix Marine Services, which operates one of the largest container terminals in the US, located at a strategic deep-water site at the Port of Los Angeles.
