Three new STS cranes for Hamburg

Following the delivery of two STS cranes in 2015 and three in 2017 to HHLA’s Tollerort terminal, the newly acquired large, dual trolley cranes are being hailed as the first step in a closer alliance between the two companies.

“We are delighted to deepen our partnership with HHLA through the sale of these innovative dual trolley ship-to-shore container cranes,” said Gerry Bunyan, managing director – sales at Liebherr Container Cranes.

“This is the second order we have received for our dual trolley cranes, following an earlier order for Eurogate’s CTW terminal,” he added.

The cranes have a safe working load of 75 tonne twin lift at an outreach of 61 metres, lift height of 53 metres, back reach of 24.5 metres and a span of 35 metres. The cabinless cranes will operate entirely through automation and remote control, backed up by the Liebherr remote operator system.

Dual trolley flexibility

The primary trolley handles container transfers between ship and shore, while the secondary portal trolley can simultaneously handle transfers from the crane to the automated guided vehicles.

This parallel operation is said to reduce wait times and improve vessel turnaround times, maximising productivity.

Service and support are provided by Liebherr Hamburg, a dedicated onsite team coupled with a large parts warehouse.

Reducing emissions

HHLA’s CTA terminal is reportedly the world’s first certified climate-neutral container handling facility. Liebherr’s dual trolley STS container cranes complement HHLA’s environmental goals with their focus on minimising energy use by regenerating and capturing power at both the primary and portal trolley hoist drives.
