DP World names new DRC port contractor

This project, which aims to enhance the DRC’s role as a critical trade hub in Africa, marks a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.

“The Banana Port is a transformative project that will reshape the trade and logistics landscape of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, group chair and chief executive of DP World.

“By partnering with Mota-Engil, we are ensuring that this world-class infrastructure is built to the highest standards, fostering economic growth and creating new opportunities for the Congolese people.

“This project will transform trade, create jobs and strengthen the country’s economy for generations to come.”

Located in the Kongo Central province along the Atlantic coast, the Banana Port will be the DRC’s sole maritime gateway for containerised cargo.

The port’s development is set to streamline trade processes, centralise administrative and customs operations, strengthen the government’s control over foreign trade and boost the country’s economic independence.

The port will be developed in phases. The first phase will feature a 600-metre quay, capable of accommodating the largest vessels, with a capacity of 450,000 teu per year and a 30-hectare storage area.

Phase two will see an extension of the quay wall by over two kilometres. DP World, along with British International Investment, is investing in this project, which is expected to generate thousands of jobs and boost local industries, particularly agriculture and manufacturing.
