Port of San Diego begins dock repair

The repair project on the west side includes pumping approximately 153 cubic metres of sand underneath the damaged floating docks and on to the adjacent beach, addressing erosion issues along the existing concrete boardwalk.

Additionally, neoprene sleeves and stainless-steel wedge anchors will be installed along the seawall to prevent future sand migration. The damaged floating docks will be removed and replaced with new floating dock systems designed to withstand the local marine environment.

The damage to the west floating dock, which occurred in June 2023, was caused by sand accumulation beneath the structure, which caused the dock to bottom out at low tide. As a result, the port closed the west dock for public safety, keeping the east side docks open.

A thorough investigation determined that widening gaps in the facility’s western wall, combined with deteriorated filter fabric, allowed excess sand migration. These issues were compounded by frequent winter storms.

The repair plan was developed in collaboration with engineering consultants and required permits from the US Army Corps of Engineers to ensure environmental protection. The total cost of repairs and replacement is estimated at US$717,000, with construction costs approved at US$386,775.

The east side floating dock will remain open and accessible for boaters whilst works are ongoing.
