Digital programme transforms bulk operations

The initiative is redefining how bulk cargo terminals operate, with deployments underway at key sites including the Port of Liverpool, Port of Birkenhead, Runcorn Docks and King George V Dock in Glasgow.

Peel Ports Group expects the programme to halve stock losses across its bulk terminals and reduce revenue leakage by up to 3%.

“The launch of this initiative is a major milestone in our wider digital transformation and the result of a highly successful partnership with TBA,” said Gavin Laybourne, chief technology and information officer at Peel Ports Group.

“In a sector where processes are traditionally shaped by legacy systems, our new technology enables us to centre our operations around customer needs and data-driven insights – a model we are now replicating across the business.”

The transformation will bring together infrastructure upgrades, process redesign and digital systems into a single, unified operating model. Central to the programme is TBA’s terminal operating system, CommTrac, which connects weighbridges, ANPR-enabled gates, driver self-service kiosks and handheld devices into one fully integrated platform.

Drivers will check in using ANPR technology, confirm dispatches at self-service kiosks and record load movements via the CommTrac mobile app, eliminating manual data entry and reducing the risk of errors.

The programme also introduces greater workforce flexibility through standardised systems and interfaces, allowing teams to move seamlessly between sites and strengthening service continuity.

The joint initiative has already been recognised by the wider industry, winning the Innovative Technology Award at this year’s International Bulk Journal Awards.
