Altamira and Manzanillo box terminals to expand

Infraestructura Portuaria Mexicana (IPM) and Altamira Terminal Portuaria (ATP) are the two Altamira installations that are to go ahead with expansion plans, along with SSA’s Terminal Especializada de Contenedores (TEC I) at Manzanillo, according to Alejandro Hernández, the director general of ports.

TEC I is now Mexico’s leading box handling facility, with throughput of 1.55m teu reported for 2016. Such is the need to expand capacity there that two new post-panamax quayside gantry cranes worth $28m have recently been put into operation.

Under the new rules, whenever there are two terminals managed by different companies handling the same cargo within a port, an additional berth of 350 metres can be built along with supporting landside infrastructure.
