Chileans plan new Fifth Region mega-port
With a forecast annual growth rate of 6%, existing capacity at Chilean ports will be exhausted by 2025, according to reports.
To combat this, the government has proposed building a brand new port to serve the country’s Fifth region, home to both San Antonio and Valparaiso ports, as well as the capital city of Santiago.
The location of the port is yet to be decided, but could be close to either of the existing ports or to Quintero.
The initial phase of the new deep draught facility is expected to become operational by 2025.
