Contract signed for new Antioquia port

The Puerto Antioquia Company (SPA), a Colombian port operating company, has chosen the Cotema consortium, consisting of the Franco-Italian company Saipen and Colombia’s Termotécnica Coindustrial, to build the port.

Initial investment will be $580m, which will result in a port able to handle up to 7m tonnes of cargo and 1.2m teu. It is slated to start operations in the last quarter of 2019, when it is hoped it will help Colombian Atlantic ports to become more competitive, given its ability to accommodate neo-panamax vessels.

The port will be 40% closer to Bogotá, Medellín, Eje Cafetero, Boyacá, and Norte del Valle, which between them generate 70% of Colombia’s GDP. It will also be 363 km closer than the existing port of Cartagena.
