Global operators vie for Corozals hand
The Panama Canal Authority has announced that 11 of the world’s largest port operators have expressed interest in the Port of Corozal.
Located on the Pacific side of the Canal, the port will be open to a public bidding and will play a major role in the development of Panama as the logistics hub of Latin America.
“The sizeable interest demonstrates the demand that exists for service on the Pacific Coast of Panama, a demand which will only grow with the opening of the expanded Canal in 2016,” said Jorge L. Quijano, Panama Canal CEO.
Companies have shown interest from all over the world, including: Terminal Investment Limited SA (Holland), EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven (Germany), Carrix, Inc. and affiliates (USA) and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. (Korea).
Other port operators who have formally expressed interest are; APM Terminals, Ports America, CMA-CGM Group, Evergreen International, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, Panama Ports Company and China Shipping Ports Development Co. Ltd. and China Harbour Engineering.
The majority of the interested parties are linked to major customers of the Panama Canal and have a desire to develop more port capacity on the Pacific side of Panama.
Colombia and Costa Rica, Panama’s boarding countries, are also said to have been making significant investments in nearby ports to take advantage of the traffic and demand that will be generated from operations when the expanded canal opens in 2016..
