Lobito port privatises terminal operations
In Angola, Soportos has taken over management of the minerals terminal, while Sogester (a consortium consisting of APM Terminals and local partners) has won the concession for the container terminal and dry dock at the Port of Lobito. In all cases, concessions have been awarded for 25 years, the length being determined sufficient enough for the concessionaires to recover their initial investment.
Both companies already operate similar facilities in the Port of Luanda, also in Angola.
They will pay the government a fixed rent of $2.50 per square metre and also variable charges of 2.5% based on the gross turnover handled in the first five years and 6.25% of the net profit of the tonnage moved thereafter.
The overall investment plan has been divided into two phases and covers the acquisition of handling equipment and upgrades to both water supply and sewage/drainage networks.
The Port of Lobito has 7,800 metres of quayside and an overall handling capacity of 11m tonnes.
