OHL wins Valparaiso Terminal 2 concession

Its winning bid of $6.8 to be levied per ton of freight handled compared with the $7.6 being sought by the rival consortium, which was formed of Grupo Empresas Navieras, Besalco and Ports of America. A definite award will be made by the end of April.

Despite fighting for the right to bid for the concession, no incumbent operator in either Valparaiso or San Antonio entered the bid for Terminal 2.

The new box handling facility, which will require investment of $400m, will be placed in operation within the next four years and will effectively double existing throughput capacity at the port.

OHL had previously bid for the contract to build and operate a similar container terminal, Terminal Costanera Espigón, at the port of San Antonio, where it lost out to the domestic Matte group.
