Perus neighbourly competition
Following agreements between Chile and Argentina to build a new rail tunnel and upgrade roads across the Andes to allow Chilean ports to handle more cargo, the Peruvian ports of Callao and Ilo are upping their game.
New infrastructure will allow the Chilean ports of Valparaiso and San Antonio to boost throughput from 1.1m teu to 2.3m teu in the next few years.
Not wishing to be left behind, the Peruvian ports of Callao, Paita and Matarani are looking into ways of reducing logistics costs, part of which will be through offering concessions to private operators, while modernisation of the port of Ilo is mooted.
