Malware attack hit shipping company

The network outage affecting the availability of Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) msc.com website and some of the company’s digital tools was reported on 10 April but is now resolved, according to MSC. Following an investigation of the incident, MSC is not aware of any lost or compromised data.

It said the incident was confined to a limited number of physical computer systems at its headquarters in Geneva only, so had a limited impact for most parts of its business, with MSC departments, terminals, depots etc. able to operate without disruptions.

“We have shared as per industry standards the malware with our technology partners so that mitigations could be made available not only to us,” said MSC on 15 April. “We will not be commenting further in detail on this point, as this would be counter-productive from a security perspective. “

It added: “MSC is very conscious of the perennial threat of cyber-security in the shipping industry and we adopt all necessary security protocols in all our communications and business transactions.

“In addition to these specific protocols, we have other confidential measures and processes in place, such as regular cyber-security training for employees on shore and at sea. Furthermore, we are in the process of continuous evolution of our internal IT systems both from software and infrastructure perspective.”
