Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has been awarded the 2015 ‘Singapore Environmental Achievement Award’ (SEAA) for its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The awards, set up in 1997, recognise organisations and companies for their overall environmental stewardship, environmental management and performance as well as leadership and innovation in sustainability.

Over the years, OOCL has implemented ‘green’ operations and initiatives including investing in the latest state-of-the-art technologies for new containerships to meet current and future environmental requirements; the implementation of the Global Vessel Voyage Monitoring Centre (GVVMC) developed by its sister company, CargoSmart, to monitor real-time vessel movements so as to enhance fleet performance and fuel efficiency; adoption of international environmental reporting and disclosure assurance standards to certify its data integrity on vessel emissions; and proactive engagement with the community through various green projects, such as educating the younger generation about the importance of protecting the environment.

“As a global corporate citizen, OOCL is very proud to be acknowledged for our commitment and efforts in operational excellence for sustainability and improving the environment in the ASEAN Region,” said Mr P C Wu, region group head of Taiwan and ASEAN Group, OOCL.

“We thank the SEC and all those involved in the awards scheme for this recognition. It is truly an honour,” he added.

This year, the SEAA Technical Work Group (TWG) assigned both the SEC and KPMG, an international auditing firm, to undergo on-site assessments of OOCL’s office and vessels to determine its environmental performance.
