Aberdeen South Harbour officially opens

The £420 million transformation will see the port’s gross value added contribution jump an estimated 60% to £2.4 billion and increase jobs supported by 45% to 17,500.

“Port of Aberdeen is the UK’s oldest business and we’re now officially opening the country’s newest harbour,” said Bob Sanguinetti, chief executive, Port of Aberdeen.

“Aberdeen’s expanded port promises a vibrant future for energy, trade, and tourism across Scotland on the road to net zero, unlocking new jobs and attracting investment to the region.”

More than 300 workers from 30 companies across the north east of Scotland have been involved in the construction of Aberdeen South Harbour, creating the largest berthage port in the country.

The new harbour has already generated more than £3 million of revenue during its phased opening and is attracting vessels and projects that would have previously sailed past the city, destined for a mainland European port.

The new facility can accommodate vessels up to 300 metres at its additional 1.5 kilometres of deepwater berths. Significant heavy lift capacity has been added along with 125,000 sqm of flexible project areas.

Roy Buchan, chair at the port, said the official opening marked a new chapter in the port’s 900 years of history. “Aberdeen South Harbour is transformational for the port, local communities, the supply chain and wider region,” he said.
